The Narrative's song 'Winter's Coming' enters band's Top 5 on Spotify

As the end of the year is getting closer and in the North Hemisphere the winter started, this time period people start to listen to theme songs such as Mariah's "All I Want for Christmas" and many others.

The Narrative doesn't have a christmas song or such, but there's a winter themed the song "Winter's Coming" originally from their debut album The Narrative and the song now entered the band's Spotify Top 5 songs most played with the acoustic version from B-Sides and Seasides

Listen to Winter's Coming

The song in this version featured only a piano and acoustic guitar with the duet of Suzie and Jesse. The full lyrics are below

Are you in danger, you swore by a ship wreck
And now you are stranded sinking like a ghost
So sit by your door, and wait for me to storm in
But I swear, I swear I'm never coming home

And the Winter's coming close
And my body is growing cold
And I'm trembling in fright, oh my
Cause I am a sinner with a crooked smile
And you took to the rhythm of a no good liar

I drown in the mirror, you notice thing is damn disease
And I never surface who I want to be
I'm shaking with bruises; I can barely stand my shame
Knowing every inch it hesitates
And it breaks and it breaks, and it breaks

And the Winter's coming close
And my body is growing cold
And I'm trembling in fright oh my

Cause I am a sinner with a crooked smile
And you took to the rhythm of a no good liar
I am a sinner with a crooked smile
And you took to the rhythm of a no good liar

Cause I am a sinner with a crooked smile
And you took to the rhythm of a no good liar
I am a sinner with a crooked smile
And you took to the rhythm of a no good liar
I am a sinner with a crooked smile
And you took to the rhythm of a no good liar
I am a sinner with a crooked smile
And you took to the rhythm of a no good liar
I am a sinner with a crooked smile
And you took to the rhythm of a no good liar
I am a sinner with a crooked smile
And you took to the rhythm of a no good liar

The Narrative posts new message on Medium about new song, NFT and more

With a short update on what the band is doing, The Narrative updated their Medium talking about their new song to be release, a new NFT project and about their TikTok. Read the post below

Contain a couple in black and white shot

Hey all, will keep this brief since I have a baaaaaad habit of rambling :) Just wanted to share a few updates:

We have a new song we’ll be releasing SOON. It has a similar vibe to Monoliths and we’re super excited about it & will keep you posted as to release date, etc.

We have another song we’ll be recording soon as well, as soon as we write a bridge for it (anyone want to send us a bridge and we’ll just squeeze it in?)

We have a TikTok and we’re really bad at it so if anyone has TikTok expertise hit us up. Otherwise we’ll just keep being super awkward.

We are starting a highly experimental project via NFTs where you (yes, you!) can start making decisions for our band and make it… your band. You can read more about it here: https://www.thenarrativemusic.com/nfts and feel free to contact us with any questions / suggestions / etc.

Thanks for reading this incredibly short message!

13th Anniversary of The Narrative's 'Just Say Yes' EP

Red background and Two digipacks showing the cover and CD-R of 'Just Say Yes' EP that says 'The Narrative' and 'Just Say Yes' with a female cartoon girl holding a hand net with a spiral of cartoon fish above her

A special view on the EP's release and production from 2008 and the meaning behind some of it's songs

This day, 13 years ago The Narrative released their first record EP "Just Say Yes" featuring the songs Castling, The Moment That it Stops, Eyes Closed, Libra, The Photographers Daughter and Waiting Room. Just Say Yes was released through the project The Record Collective on August 30, 2008. After its release, the EP was featured in the front page of Myspace and also on episodes of MTV's Reality TV Shows.

The EP was recorded by The band at Red Wire Audio in New York and Produced by Bryan Russell.

Songs like 'Castling' plays with words to talk about a game of chess and the way a person "Take, take it all, rook to king / Oh I've been guarding something /You keep chasing me to walls, always." and "There's nothing left that I won't say/'Cause my queen moves every single way'".

The song 'The Moment That it Stops' is samples the song "Company Calls" from Death Cab for Cutie, a great inspiration for the band in their style of music. 'Eyes Closed' is a song about a couple fight during a road trip. According to Jesse is a personal story. About the final verse "I pushed your hand away from the radio" he says:

As for the former, it's a totally literal line. We were arguing over something until that point when you just stop saying anything to one another, and I had music playing that she went to turn off. I'd turn it back on, she'd turn it back off, I'd turn it back on, etc., when at one point I pushed her hand back when she tried to turn it off. I just felt really awful about that, and later on the whole thing felt like one of those "What were we even arguing about?" moments, and not worth it at all to get so worked up over. "I should have just let it go" - not just the hand, but the whole of it.

He already talked about it, you can read the post here. The song  attention after being featured into tv shows and is the most streamed song by the band on YouTube with 4,5+ Million streams.

You can listen to the whole EP at Bandcamp also available to download in FLAC, AIFF High Quality for $5.93. Go to https://thenarrative.bandcamp.com/album/just-say-yes

The Narrative's new song 'Monoliths' featured on Bops & Bangers! Podcast

The new song from The Narrative, 'Monoliths' is featured on the GRRRLMusic's Podcast Bops & Bangers!. The song was the week Podcast Break Music to the listeners and they did a little review from it on the Instagram post, you can read below:

THE NARRATIVE - “MONOLITHS” 🌻

Indie folk-rock duo The Narrative have returned from their hiatus to release their first single, “Monoliths”.

A poignant indie folk song that highlights singers Susie Zeldin and Jesse Gabriel’s stunning harmonies. With a traditional twang and a beating melody that keeps the song moving ahead. 🌸

The random hard drum and guitars add an ambiance to the song that gives it that heavier sound and every time it beats, I get those musical tingles ✨✨

Thanks to The Narrative for letting us use their newest single, “Monoliths” in this week’s episode of Bops & Bangers! Make sure you listen to the episode on Spotify and Apple Podcasts 💕💕

The Narrative shares new song Monoliths lyrics on Medium post

The Narrative posted a new Medium entry wrote by Jesse talking about the process of writing a song. "Lyrics have always been as much of a joy as a struggle for me, but the older I get the more I grapple with my lyrical multiple personalities." he writes.

Hey all! So, as some of you may have heard via the Twitter, we’ve got a new track coming out on 6/14 called Monoliths and I wanted to take some time to talk about the lyrics for the song, and lyrics in general. I thought it might be an interesting topic to explore, but of course if you don’t care I completely respect your decision (in Minecraft).

The post also talks about the meaning of the new song "Monoliths". Here's the lyrics:

Monoliths Lyrics

It was cold in Atlanta
A frigid wind dragged you in
Sat you down beside my kin

And we drove to Savannah
Sullen trees bearing leaves
Susurrating in the breeze

Somewhere there’s a fever rising up
Hearts apprised of universal dust
But if it’s not enough it’s not enough
The monoliths of metal turn to rust

When we bailed out of Georgia
There was fire in the air
Orphaned houses everywhere

So you wept in a corner
Singing names of your friends
Who you’ll never hold again

Somewhere there’s a fever rising up
Hearts apprised of universal dust
And if it’s not enough it’s not enough
The monoliths of metal turn to rust

I’ve been waiting for this
For years for you
Walking around these heads in the ground
I’ve been stowing patience

For years for you
What do you need?
What do you need me to do?

Somewhere there’s a fever rising up
Hearts apprised of universal dust
And if it’s not enough it’s not enough
The monoliths of metal turn to rust

Jesse affirms that "Monoliths is a fantasy song. It’s meant to express a thought or opinion through a romanticized version of something that never existed except inside of my head." also break down the lyrics from the song.

New photo on The Narrative's instagram about 'Monoliths'

To promote the new song "Monoliths", The Narrative had posted a new photo on their Instagram account @thenarrativemusic. The band captioned the photo with the proccess of recording a song during the pandemic of Covid-19:

We have a new song coming out on 6/14. It’s called Monoliths. We recorded it during the pandemic and practiced it on my (Suzie’s) back porch far enough away from each other that we wouldn’t give each other COVID if we had it, but close enough to know we had some really pretty harmonies going. We can’t wait to share it with you. It is the *exact opposite* of a happy summer jam that a band might release around this time of year but we’ve never been good at following the trends so...

Behind the story: The Narrative shares the story of the song 'Reason to Leave'

The Narrative posted on the band's Instagram a video with the lyrics of the single 'Reason to Leave' off of the second studio album "Golden Silence" and (Jesse) wrote the captions talking about the meaning of the song that talks about the life of immigrants in the US and what is the struggles some of them have to go through

Listen to 'Reason to Leave'

In 2010 my (Jesse) then-girlfriend-now-wife who is a natural born Mexican citizen was employed as a pastry chef at a hot new Manhattan based bakery. The bakery, which had said they’d try to acquire a work visa for her, ultimately could not, and so she applied on her own. She made the decision she would leave her position at the bakery while waiting for her status approval, and went to visit her family for a week in Mexico before returning back legally on a separate visa she had. On her way back, because she had applied for a work visa she was flagged at immigration. Had she not applied, she would have had no issues. After being asked if she was working in the US and honestly responding about her situation, she was issued a 5 year deportation.

There’s a lot more context here but I was struggling with a lot of anger, sadness, and frustration at the state of immigration in our country. One day I was listening to Icky Thump by @thewhitestripes and was inspired to write about it, and thus "Reason to Leave" was born. “Well, Americans: What, nothing better to do? Why don’t you kick yourself out? You’re an immigrant too. Who’s using who? What should we do? Well you can’t be a pimp and a prostitute too.”

For those immigrants who get sworn in today to US citizenship, they are forced to renounce any “allegiance and fidelity” to their homeland and “bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law”. Listen to the whole song on Golden Silence, our 2016 full length available on Spotify.

The Narrative shares the story behind their first Photoshoot on 2008

The Narrative's Instagram post about their first photoshoot and the 'piss' looking bottle

Suzie posted a new photo on The Narrative's instagram talking about their first photoshoot in 2008 with Lindsay Blair. The caption for the post tells what is the concept of the photoshoot and what happened.

Read it below:

I have to give Jesse credit for giving me a lot of creative license when it came to art or photos for The Narrative. This is from one of our first photo shoots ever. It was taken on a Brooklyn rooftop on Tillary Street across from the Manhattan Bridge where we were recording the Just Say Yes EP. My brain was like... well the artwork for the EP has fish and this boy holding a fishbowl... let’s take some photos with fishbowls. And off I went to the pet store. Can you imagine what they thought when I bought like 10 fishbowls?! The answer is NOTHING. New York City is a strange place and there are way stranger people doing farrrrrr more questionable things than stocking up on fishbowls. How did I even get anywhere with 10 fishbowls? Did I have a cart? That’s the real unsolved mystery. Oh and then there was the food coloring. Because magical fish need magical water, obviously & everyone knows food coloring is basically magic. Yellow food coloring was a mistake though, in hindsight. Just looked like a bowl full of pee. However, through the power of cropping and the glory of the Sepia filter, we managed a decent promo shot for the time. Plastered that shit all over MySpace. 😘 Will post a bunch to stories soon. Drop me an emoji if you got to the bottom of this post and I’ll pick someone at random & send over a copy of our EP in the mail (signed if you’d like, up to you). Weeeee! #giveaway #goodmusic

The Narrative posts letter on Medium about 'An effort to be 'back'

The Narrative posted a letter into their new page on Medium, talking about the band's past years since the release of Golden Silence and what happened since then.

The letter starts with

I guess I should begin with the expectation that very few people will read this. As a band, we have been fairly inactive and off the grid for around 10 years now. Our last release, “Golden Silence” (the record I am honestly most proud of to this day!) was released in 2016, though we actually recorded that album in 2012.
This delayed release is actually a microcosm of a larger symptom of issues that started not long after our 2011 tour with Eisley, the last tour we had together.
I’d like to use this post to accomplish a couple of different goals:

1. Give some context around what happened to us and why we stopped making music.
2. Talk about how we plan / hope to make music in the future.
The band talks about the journey with them since the tours and about financial crisis as a independent band. Also, about the new projects coming soon, as they expect to release new songs soon.

Real the full letter here.
