Update (04/23/21) The band changed the description about their profile and affirming to release new music in 2021.

The Narrative is an American independent indie rock band from Long Island, New York, formed in 2008. They are currently based in Nashville, Tennessee. Band members Suzie Zeldin (vocals, keyboards) and Jesse Gabriel (vocals, guitar) started their musical career with their first release, the Just Say Yes EP, where the mostly acoustic track "Eyes Closed" stands out as the most popular song with 4+ million views on YouTube. Their debut self-titled full length was released in 2010, with "Fade" featured as their first single. After touring for most of 2011, they released B-Sides and Seasides online in 2012 to fund the recording of their second studio album, Golden Silence, which was released on December 2, 2016. The Narrative will release new music in 2021 to their incredibly patient and wonderful fans that seem to always be by their side.

A FANCY UPDATE!
Hey all you hip and trendy followers of our little band! We just wanted to give you a quick update since we haven't in a little while.

We're currently in the studio with our good buddy/producer/expert marathonist, Bryan Russell, hammering out the last of the tracking for the songs we started working on in March.

Right now the focus has been laying down the remainder of the backing vocals and harmonies as well as sorting through a bunch of instrumental arrangements that we worked on with the very brilliant Alex Overington.

The new album is definitely shaping up different from the older records, but we think it still has that same Narrative charm you all have grown to love! There are a lot of lush, orchestral or quasi-orchestral arrangements mixed in with some electronic components and of course our usual piano/guitar/drums/bass thing, but even throughout the more "grandiose" songs there is a feeling of intimacy. Think Jimmy Eat World meets Bon Iver meets Counting Crows meets Regina Spektor meets Arcade Fire meets Modest Mouse meets Bruce Springsteen meets a whole bunch of other stuff. That should straighten it out for you.

Anyway, we're really excited about it and we hope you don't mind us taking our time and trying to get it all right.

We might have some East Coast shows coming up in November and December and we'll keep you posted about that. We hope to be back to touring early next year with the release of some new material.

In the meantime, please remember that we are so grateful for your support! Without you we wouldn't be able to be doing this, and for that we are forever in your debt.

Love,
Jesse & Suzie

January 12, 2016 - Released the promotional single "Moving Out" (Premiere on No Country For New Nashville)

January 27, 2016 - Released the single "Toe The Line" and following on October 28, 2016 the song "California Sun" (premiere). The song was featured in Indie Shuffle as "

California Sun" is smooth rays of golden sunshine shining effortlessly on your face. Unnoticeable yet warm.

November 9, 2016 - Promoting the album release, they published the song "Oklahoma Air" premiering at Impose Magazine (premiere) followed by the song "Reason To Leave" at Glide Magazine, that said

The song is about the hypocrisies and double standards of US immigration policies. Set to a lush orchestral instrumental backdrop, the song waxes and wanes through moments of both calm resolution and subtle chaos.

December, 2, 2016 - Finally, The Narrative released the 12 track album "Golden Silence". The title is featured in "California Sun" at the lyrics read "It feels good with the sun in your eyes, good vibes and the golden silence".

The story and the meaning behind The Narrative's song 'Don't Want to Fall'

Around some months we posted a archive from The Narrative where the band talked about the meaning of their songs. Jesse wrote about Eyes Closed, read here. And now, Suzie posted a letter about the song 'Don't Want to Fall' that is also one of the most listened song from the band. You can read the full story below:

I started writing "Don’t Want to Fall" around the same time I wrote “Waiting Room.” It just took me a lot longer to finish it so it was never in consideration for the Just Say Yes EP. When I write lyrics, it’s partially conscious, partially subconscious. It can take me a few weeks, months, or even years to understand exactly why a lyric came together the way it did. I tend to write music when I am feeling something, even if I don’t quite know exactly what I am feeling. It helps me figure things out. Sometimes it takes a while.

To answer someone’s specific question, yes, this song is about a specific person. Once upon at time, I had a short-lived relationship with one of my really close friends. It was a roller-coaster: highest highs, lowest lows, twists and turns, and finally a completely abrupt ending (I didn’t want it to end, but it had to - I am pretty sure he was still in love with somebody else and it led to him doing some pretty hurtful things). It was tough losing a relationship and a best friend at the same time. It did get me into songwriting though which pretty much changed the course of my entire life, and through songwriting and music, I met the love of my life who is now my husband (yay!)

Here is something you might not know about me: I’m obsessed with closure. To me, closure means everyone is happy and friends again! I realize that this is slightly crazy but hey, color me optimistic! So, this song is about making the decision to meet up with someone I used to be in a relationship with because I wanted closure and reassurance that I was definitely totally over it, and I wanted to get over the awkwardness of seeing that person again. Some small part of me was a little terrified that I might not actually be over it, which is where the chorus of the song comes from. Spoiler alert: I was over it!

The lyrics of the song are a combination of imagination and reality. Once we set the plans to meet up, I had some narrative in my head about how everything would go. Things would be awkward initially. He would be sort of clumsy as usual. That’s the first verse. The second verse is a bit more literal, it’s about walking around in the East Village which is where I lived when we were dating.

The bridge is one of my favorite parts of the song, particularly because of the time signature change (nerdy musician stuff) and that it feels super nostalgic to me, which is exactly what I wanted it to feel like. Actually, the bridge was half as long originally. I added the lyric “And now we say that we were young and what we had has come and gone” when I played the song for my voice teacher who encouraged me to extend the part because she liked it so much.

I think my favorite lyric in the song is “You’re not easy to forget.” It’s really simple, but it always makes me feel something. It also didn’t occurr to me that it might be super weird to repeat a technical word like “intercom” in an airy falsetto. Looking back, I am always a little amused at that decision.

I remember playing the song for Jesse and asking what he wanted to do with it. We decided to keep it almost exactly as it was written - no additional instrumentation, just piano and vocals. I love doing alternate versions of our songs (ahem, B-Sides & Seasides) but I think if we recorded this one again tomorrow, I would keep it just like this all over again.

Hope you all enjoyed this... if anyone made it to the end of this post, let me know!

The Narrative post message about Nashville tornado

On Tuesday (03) a series of tornadoes, damaged and destructed parts of the state of Nashville, TN, leaving more than 24 deads, at the time (AP).

The band, that moved on 2016 to Nashville, posted a message on Instagram about the storms and making a safety noticed about their families:

We are truly heartbroken over the loss of lives in our community from the tornadoes earlier this week. It’s taken a few days to really process it.

For those that checked in on us, we appreciate you. For the technology that sent out emergency alerts and woke us up in the middle of a dead sleep just in time to collect our kids from their beds, we appreciate you.

We are truly heartbroken over the loss of lives in our community from the tornadoes earlier this week. It’s taken a few days to really process it. As the shock is lifting, the feeling is setting in. Too many close calls. So much to rebuild. Some things that can never be undone. An incredible effort locally to clean up and support. It’s hard to put all the feelings into words. So thankful that our homes weren’t hit and that our children were spared, and that our safe zones weren’t put to the ultimate test. We were just a mile from the worst of the damage. Being here is not the same as seeing pictures. Walking the streets is what will humble you. For those that checked in on us, we appreciate you. For the technology that sent out emergency alerts and woke us up in the middle of a dead sleep just in time to collect our kids from their beds, we appreciate you. For everyone who still managed to get out and vote the day after all of this, we appreciate you. For everyone cleaning up this mess, we appreciate you. We appreciate you. #nashvillestrong #thenarrativemusic #nashville #ibelieveinnashville

Behind The Lyrics: Jesse tells the meaning and the story of 'Eyes Closed'

*This is an old restored post

The Narrative asked on Facebook for questions about everything that involves the band. A lot of people, asked about the lyrics of their songs, and they started the first 'series' with the history of "Eyes Closed". Check out below the post on Facebook made by Jesse.

The full post

So it seems like a pretty large group of the AMA post was wondering what specific songs were about or what inspired them. We'll play ball, and we'll start this off with Eyes Closed, since a number of you asked about that song.

I'm just going to give the full ins and outs here, which are a bunch of things I'm not sure I've ever talked about before...

Anyway, the song was originally built off of the verse guitar part, which was something I had been toying with for a while and people kept saying "is that a song you're working on?" and I'd say "nah, not really", and they'd respond "well it should be". So, I decided I'd lay something down for it, and see how it builds.

When I wrote it, I was pretty fresh off of a breakup with someone who meant a lot to me, and it was difficult for me to cope with it in a lot of ways.

Lyrically, the song is pretty direct.. I mean, there's some metaphorical stuff going on, but overall it's pretty literal. I'm essentially recalling a car ride down the coast of California that we had together.

The truth is, this person taught me a lot as far as what I know about writing. She taught me from a poetry perspective, but I was always translating that to song writing in my brain, and I think that gave me an interesting perspective. In writing the entire "Just Say Yes" EP, I kept looking at certain things as a challenge to prove myself to her, even though the relationship was already in the past. Not that even NOW do I feel close to really "knowing" how to write great lyrics, but I had a pretty specific focus when writing those songs, which I now look upon in a nostalgic way.

At the time of this car ride, we were already sort of on the outs with one another. There was some emotional friction; a barrier I couldn't get through. Listening back on the song now (it has been a while), I guess I was feeling that pretty strongly!

Not many specific lyrical questions in the thread - though if anyone has any more I'll gladly answer them - but I saw some stuff about "I pushed your hand away from the radio", and I know tons of people have commented about the "oh my god, you're beautiful" line.

As for the former, it's a totally literal line. We were arguing over something until that point when you just stop saying anything to one another, and I had music playing that she went to turn off. I'd turn it back on, she'd turn it back off, I'd turn it back on, etc., when at one point I pushed her hand back when she tried to turn it off. I just felt really awful about that, and later on the whole thing felt like one of those "What were we even arguing about?" moments, and not worth it at all to get so worked up over. "I should have just let it go" - not just the hand, but the whole of it.

The latter, "oh my god, you're beautiful". Oh, how I battled with this line. It's just on the border for me where I'm like "this is preeeetttyyy cheesy", but at the same time felt genuine... like, I remember having this moment while watching her sleep in the car of "oh my god, she's beautiful"... and I guess at the end of the day I felt like if it's something that felt real, I should throw it down and see how it plays out. Suzie also gave it the "ok" (we actually has a specific discussion over that line because I was so unsure about it), and for me the Suzie "ok" is like the most legit stamp of approval. Turned out a lot of people really related to this line, and I think that's awesome. I'm not sure I'll ever write a line like THAT again, but it's a fascinating documentation of my lyrical experimentation for me.

Anyway, that's a whole lot already! I'll be amazed if anyone reads the whole thing. If anyone has any other questions, feel free to drop them here and I'll answer them truthfully (to a fault).

We'll do one of these a week. I'm gonna try to get Suzie to get down with "Don't Want To Fall" next week!

Jesse
